Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it should also be one in which you give extra attention to your oral health, hygiene, and professional dental needs. Your dental and oral habits now can also have an impact on your long-term health and the dental and overall health of your unborn child.
Oral Hygiene
Great care should be taken with your oral hygiene regimen. Brushing and flossing regularly, as instructed by our guidelines, is exceptionally important. Hormones level will change during pregnancy, which may cause extra sensitivity to plaque and gum bleeding, which is why excellent oral hygiene is recommended during pregnancy.
Nutrition
Proper nutrition is important for everyone, but especially so for expectant mothers. Be sure to get adequate vitamins and minerals, particularly vitamins A, C and D, protein, calcium and phosphorous. For specific dieting guidelines, follow your physician’s advice.
Professional Dental Care
Professional dental visits should be maintained as scheduled during pregnancy. Be sure to inform your dentist or dental specialist that you are (or suspect you might be) pregnant, so that issues such as oral sedatives and x-rays can be discussed with you and, if needed, your physician.
